Mulching

Aesthetically, mulch is very pleasing to the eye. It creates a sharp contrast between areas, outlines dimensions and gives ‘balance’ to a yard plush in various shades of green.

Typically, mulch is thought of in terms of pine or cedar, in various shades of brown. Reds and blacks are popular choice as well. Most mulches will need to be turned over yearly for a fresh look, and will need replacement or a topcoat roughly every third year.

Do not underestimate the benefits of stone.  Now gaining in popularity as a substitute to mulch, stone is more costly up front but does not require constant turnover and or replacement if properly layered. Color choices range from grays to browns and is usually applied 2–3 inches in depth with half to 3/4 inch product.

The benefits of mulch and stone include :

  • Retention of water
  • Moist, cool soil
  • Balance and contrast
  • Curb appeal
  • Overall landscape improvement
